Land Acknowledgement

Every one of us, regardless of ethnicity, are treaty people–we are all obligated to live in accordance with the agreements we made in occupying this land. In Barrie, we live on the land covered by the Williams Treaty of 1923, the traditional territory of the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Pottawatomi Nations collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy, and also the Wendat Nation (Huron) who occupied these lands prior to the middle of the 17th century. These peoples have cared for these lands and still care for them now. We aim to help steward them well, for we also share them with millions of other lives, large and small, whose relationships we all depend on. We work to live with and protect the plant and animal lives that came here before us, on whose land we make our lives.
